Festival Artists Include:
Roger Pell - like a Keith Jarrett of the guitar. A great guitarist, composer, and improviser. Worked extensively with tabla player Keith Manning and Flautist Jim Denley in the early 80's (in ‘Triad’, a sort of forerunner to Guy Strazzullo's Australian Creole), then left town for the bush. Now living in Melbourne. An amazing mature musician, now in his 50's.
Guy Strazzullo and Passion Fruit - Guy is well known to Sydney jazz and world music fans. He has worked extensively with almost every Australian jazz great including Don Burrows and Monica and the Moochers. Another that Guy frequently works with is shakuhachi player Riley Lee. Seriously a great player and teacher.
Peter Toohey - has been playing duos with the likes of Don Andrews and George Golla over the years. He taught almost every jazz guitarist in Sydney from 1975 to 1990. Peter is a fine jazz player who now plays a lot of steel string acoustic music as well as bass. His 'guitar orchestrations' are superb, ranging from Joni Mitchell tunes to John Lennon and DukeEllington.
Double T - Music for guitar and cello. An exquisite blend of classical, tango and jazz styles. A well known Sydney duo.
The Sydney Guitar Trio - Great classicalbased players who play major classical festivals in Australia and overseas, including most recently the Darwin International Guitar Festival. Director Raphaelle Agostino teaches with the String Faculty at the Sydney Conservatoium. They play much Australian for guitar and cello. An exquisite blend of classical, tango and jazz styles. A well known Sydney duo.
The Martinez Brothers - are well known as a great guitar duo around Sydney. They captivate their audience with beautiful and forceful performances. Great players!
Rod McCormack - from the country and contemporary country/rock genre. An award-winning guitarist and producer who has played with every great country artist this country has seen including the Danglin’ Brothers, Lee Kernaghan, The Wheel and Gina Geffreys. An astonishing player. Twice the winner of the Australian flat-pick guitar award.
Luke O'Neill - Luke is most sought after Celtic music guitarist. Never far from a ‘session’. Luke has also composed much for guitar and ensemble, and it is this which we will be hearing the festival. His album 'Beltane' is a must for collectors of acoustic Australian music. Seriously a great guitarist/composer in an acoustic idiom. One can hear heritage in this guy!
Rick Falkiner - is known to many Sydney guitarists as a dealer of fine instruments. However, Rick is also a great guitar orchestrator, who will be presenting a concert/workshop on what it is to craft a good accompaniment/work as an accompanist. He will also have a range of fine Australian guitars and other guitars available inspection.
Karpatsky Gypsy Guitars - as the name suggests, Django 'covers' and much music from Russia to Macedonia. Their music is not a 'world music' excursion, it is the real thing! Stephen Lalor lived in the Ukraine for a couple of years studying domra (mandolin) in Kiev, and Samir Kos is a great player from Bosnia. A very exciting duo.
Lucas Michailidis - Australia rarely heard a with the sensitivity of
Lucas. Melbourne player whose album 'The Offering' is a beauty. Recently,
Lucas won prestigious Open Strings acoustic guitarist award in Europe,
yet is still little known here. American guitar educator Ted Greene predicts
Lucas to have a huge future in the guitar world.
Note: These are just some of the artists booked at present.
